I'm a Maker Because...

Heidi Joy interview

What inspires you to keep making things?

"A lifestyle that allows me to have a creative outlet where no day is the same and I am continuously being challenged and learning new things is what motivates me to keep making things. Seeing the lumber transform into something new and seeing my completed projects in their new spaces is also very satisfying and motivating."

What one piece of advice would you give to other makers?

"Keep learning. Don't settle for what you know and what you can do, now. If something doesn't work, tweak it, change it, scrap it, start again. If you don't know how, learn how. Let yourself and your work evolve and you will find success."

Challenge yourself, adopt new habits, learn new techniques, and then learn some more. Heidi’s inspiration for making things along with the advice she shares here is very inspiring.

As artists we inevitably will, at times, discover our niche, our comfort zone and just stay within that. In creating and making things, but also in other aspects of life, it’s important to continuously challenge yourself and learn new things. Above all else, always enjoy the process.

"If something doesn't work, tweak it, change it, scrap it, start again." — Heidi Joy
