I'm a Maker Because...

Jenny Duke interview

What inspires you to keep making things?

"So many things inspire me to keep going. But, having the reactions I get from my customers when they see my work, is probably the most validating. For me, woodworking isn't doing just one aspect of it, I enjoy all of it.

I make lots of home decor items, but I also like challenging myself with small furniture builds, cool techniques with tools and new finishes. Getting the reaction, 'you made THAT?!' is pretty great. There will always be failures, but having stoked customers - makes it easy to keep challenging myself."

What one piece of advice would you give to other makers?

"I get asked this question pretty often. And my answer is always, just start. Don't worry about the tools you have or don't have. Just start.

You already of the passion to do something, which is what many people are still searching for. So with that passion, will come your product, regardless of the tools you have. You'll accumulate as you go, as you figure out your niche.

And also, never compare yourself to other similar makers. Focus on why you started and not on anyone else. Comparing yourself to others is a slippery slope and in my opinion very unhealthy. Just do your thing. Period."
