Former shoe store store clerk and environmentally-conscious husband-and-wife duo, Shane and Mandy Smith, had been treating their shoes, boots, and leather goods with an oil-based, bad-smelling grease for years.
They knew there was an opportunity for them to create a much better conditioner and balm.
Some of their story —
Shane Smith started working for a small, New England-based shoe business at a young age. This job saw him through high school and college.
During this time, he was using a petroleum-based shoe grease to clean customer’s old shoes.
He describes the grease as smelling terrible and leaving his hands slimy. But the satisfaction and shock from customers by how drastically this simple treatment improved the look of their shoes and boots, made it all worth it.
For years, Shane and Mandy had used this oil-based grease to care for their own shoes, boots and leather goods in our home, as well.
When their son was born, they started paying closer attention to the toxic ingredients in common household products and they wanted a leather conditioner that they could apply by hand to leather goods, without all of the harmful chemicals.
That’s what led this husband-and-wife duo to developing their own 100% all-natural leather balm. Smith’s Leather Balm is handmade in Maine with 3 natural ingredients: organic cocoa butter, beeswax, and pure sweet almond oil.
This balm is just as effective as the grease they previously used at the shoe store but it’s safer and won’t leave your hands greasy and has no foul odor, to boot.
"We make old things look new. Not just boots. Leather seats, bags, belts and more." — Shane and Mandy Smith, Smith’s Leather Balm
